Palladian Terrazzo project summary.

This project features a Palladian terrazzo installation using locally quarried Vancouver Island white marble in a modern waterfront home in Victoria. Working with Jenny Martin Design and general contractor GT Mann, our team installed terrazzo in the kitchen, entrance, and bathroom.

The system was built over an uncoupled membrane, ensuring long-term stability and crack protection.

Key details include:

  • A 45° mitred stair nosing return that creates the illusion of a solid 8” thick slab.

  • Perfectly matched thresholds where terrazzo meets the hardwood floors.

  • Cohesive continuity across kitchen, entry, and bath spaces for a unified design.

The result is a tailored terrazzo surface that blends local material, technical precision, and refined design intent — a true showcase of craft in a modern architectural setting.

A Personal Touch in Every Piece

One of the most meaningful aspects of this project was the homeowner’s direct involvement in shaping the floor. They hand-broke some of the marble pieces into forms that resonated with them and even wrote nostalgic, personal messages on the back of select pieces before they were set in place. These hidden notes are now permanently encapsulated within the floor, creating a layer of story and memory that only they know exists.

This process highlights one of the most unique qualities of Palladian terrazzo: its ability to be deeply customized. Unlike a manufactured product, each installation is handcrafted, allowing space for personal expression. Whether it’s a specific shape, a chosen stone, or even hidden messages, these floors can carry meaning that goes far beyond design—turning a surface into a legacy.

Stair Nosing Detail

One of the standout features of this installation is the 45-degree return into the stair tread nosing. From the beginning, our team pushed for this detail, knowing it would elevate the entire design and make the installation truly pop. To achieve it, we carefully cut the Palladian marble pieces on a perfect 45-degree angle, allowing the nosing to visually wrap and return seamlessly. We then built a custom form and poured the encapsulating grout to lock the detail in place. The end result is a striking, monolithic look that gives the impression of an 8-inch-thick slab of marble — absolutely stunning in both craftsmanship and effect.
